Half-Year Action Review
HALF-YEAR ACTION REVIEW

United States — 2026 H1 Action Review

January–June 2026

1. Half-Year at a Glance

This report measures recorded actions involving the United States within the World Log dataset during the first half of 2026. The dataset tracks structured action records, capturing changes in volume, counterparty interaction, topic focus, and sector classification over time. Record counts represent visibility within the collected dataset rather than a complete record of all US real-world activity or a measure of political importance. Patterns described reflect dataset visibility during the period rather than definitive proof of real-world initiation, cessation, or strategic intent.

2. Six-Month Overview

Viewing six months of structured action data together reveals clear structural patterns across external security, bilateral trade, technology policy, and diplomatic mediation. Defense and diplomacy remained the two largest raw sector classifications throughout all six months, accounting for 377 and 346 records respectively. Monthly volumes for both sectors remained comparatively stable, with the exception of a defense surge in March (75 records). Domestic politics records exhibited a temporary decline in February and March before recovering to 54–60 records per month in the second quarter, while economic activity remained consistently high and sanctions-classified records expanded in Q2.

Iran-related activity represents the most continuous cross-period counterparty flow, appearing in 310 unique records across all six months. The interaction spans defense, diplomacy, security, economy, sanctions, and domestic policy, intensifying in March and April while remaining substantial through June. China also maintained unbroken visibility across all six months (103 unique records), consistently linking economic and technology controls with security and diplomatic interaction across topics such as Taiwan, critical minerals, semiconductor equipment, and maritime safety. Israel similarly appeared in every month, displaying increasing overlap with Iran-related defense operations and later Q2 Israel–Lebanon diplomatic efforts.

The composition of action classifications shifted over the half-year. Public statement-classified records increased steadily from 61 in January to 79 in June, whereas the broad general_other classification declined from 71 to 38. Planning and proposal-related records were also more numerous in the second quarter than in the first three months.

8. What the Six-Month View Reveals

  1. Iran Engagement Is a Continuous Multi-Domain Priority: Iran-related activity is visible across all six months (310 unique records) and spans military strikes, maritime defense, sanctions, and diplomatic proposal channels rather than an isolated event.
  2. Defense and Diplomacy Maintain Co-Equal Lead Status: Defense (377) and diplomacy (346) remain the twin primary drivers of US action records, with defense peaking in March during Middle East kinetic actions and diplomacy peaking in April.
  3. China Strategy Consistently Interlocks Economy, Tech, and Security: China-related records (103) demonstrate tight integration between semiconductor export controls, critical minerals initiatives, Taiwan defense warnings, and direct military safety talks.
  4. Israel–Lebanon Diplomacy Reaches Active Brokerage in Q2: Israel–Lebanon diplomatic engagement transitions from near-zero visibility in Q1 to a major recurring flow in April–June, culminating in US-hosted talks and ceasefire brokerage.
  5. Statement-Classified Messaging Expands Continuously: Public statement records grow month-by-month from 61 in January to 79 in June, representing an increasing proportion of captured US actions over time.
  6. Counterparty Focus Exhibits Distinct Temporal Volatility: While Iran and China remain steady, counterparties such as Venezuela (30 in Jan vs 4 in Jun) and Russia (15 in Feb/Mar vs 1 in Jun) decline sharply, whereas Syria/ISIS security actions re-emerge after a 3-month gap.
